The best insurance you forgot you bought
UM/UIM coverage — uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist — is one of the most valuable protections in your policy, and also the most overlooked. Many Victor Valley drivers carry it without realizing, or rejected it without understanding what they were giving up.
In a region where a real share of drivers are uninsured or carry only the minimum, this coverage isn't a luxury: it's often the difference between recovering your losses and being stuck with the bills.
What UM/UIM coverage actually does
Think of UM/UIM as your safety net for when the at-fault driver can't pay. It covers two scenarios that are all too common in the High Desert.
- UM (uninsured): protects you when the at-fault driver has no policy — or flees and is never identified.
- UIM (underinsured): covers the gap when the at-fault driver's policy, say the $30,000 minimum, isn't enough for your injuries.
- It often covers your passengers too, and you as a pedestrian if a car hits you.
Why it matters so much with the new 30/60/15 minimums
Even though California raised the minimums to 30/60/15 in 2025, those amounts are still not enough for a serious injury. A single stay at Victor Valley Global Medical Center, or an airlift down the hill, can blow past $30,000 easily.
When the at-fault driver's policy runs out, your UIM steps in to cover the rest up to the limit you bought. Without it, that money simply doesn't exist and the bills fall on you, no matter whose fault it was.
The hit-and-run case
Hit-and-run crashes are frequent on the I-15 and Bear Valley Road. When the at-fault driver isn't identified, there's no other policy to pursue — and that's exactly when your UM coverage is the only source of payment left.
That's why it pays to review your declarations page today and confirm how much UM/UIM you carry. If you rejected it in writing in the past, you can still ask to add it going forward.
