California insurance policy documents showing the new 30 60 15 minimum liability limits

What changed in California in 2025

For decades, California had one of the lowest auto-insurance minimums in the country: just 15/30/5. In 2025 that jumped to 30/60/15, the first increase in a long time, and it affects every High Desert driver.

The change is good news for victims, but it helps to understand what those numbers mean and why, even now, they still aren't enough for a serious injury.

What the numbers 30/60/15 mean

The three numbers represent the minimum liability coverage the law requires. Each covers something different.

  1. $30,000 for the injury or death of a single person in an accident.
  2. $60,000 total for the injuries or deaths of several people in the same accident.
  3. $15,000 for property damage, like vehicles.

Why the new minimum still falls short

Although 30/60/15 beats the old 15/30/5, it's still not enough against the real cost of a serious injury. A stay at Victor Valley Global Medical Center, a surgery, or months of therapy blow past $30,000 without difficulty.

If the driver who hits you carries only the minimum and your bills are higher, that policy runs out and the rest is uncovered — unless you have your own protection. That's the gap many families discover too late.

Your UM/UIM coverage fills the gap

This is where your own policy becomes the hero. UM/UIM coverage — uninsured or underinsured motorist — pays when the at-fault driver's coverage isn't enough or doesn't exist.

With the new minimums still so low against real medical costs, carrying enough UM/UIM is probably the best insurance decision you can make. It's cheap compared to what it protects, and in the High Desert it gets used more than anyone would like.

Review your policy in light of the change

The 2025 increase is a good moment to review your own declarations page: confirm your limits, understand your UM/UIM, and adjust what's needed before you need it.
